Reaction to the President’s State of the Union Address

By admin

First let me start with what I liked. I was glad to hear that the focus is now on jobs, although based on the rest of his speech, I doubt that any meaningful action will be taken. I did like the idea of using 30 Billion dollars to be available for loans to small businesses, since small business growth is vital to job creation. The president also mentioned tax cuts for small business investment and eliminating the capital gains tax for small business investment. He contradicted that statement though, when he stated he would take tax cuts away from those who make more the 250K, which are mostly small business owners. Other areas of the speech I liked were his statements regarding Immigration, Nuclear Proliferation, Ear mark transparency and reform, and the need to reinstate Paygo. That is what I liked about his speech. Now what I didn’t like, He continues to push for his version of Healthcare reform. Clearly, Americans don’t want the federal government managing their healthcare. Massachusetts was a clear indication of how Americans felt about the healthcare legislation. He also spent a lot of time talking about the creation of the right kind of jobs. The right kind of jobs, according to president Obama, are green jobs. I think Americans will take purple jobs at this point, lets get Americans back to work. He spoke of how China and India are moving forward, building their infrastructure and investing in their economies. What he failed to mention is that they are not limiting their growth by specifying what industry should grow or restricting their manufacturers with unneeded emission legislation like Cap and Trade. The president’s focus on Healthcare and Cap and Trade shows me that his administration is out of touch with what Americans want and need. And more importantly, the president doesn’t understand how to achieve his goals of doubling our exports along with creating jobs in America. He still sees that government is the solution to our problems. The president also spoke about cutting spending and reducing our deficit and our national debt. This portion of his speech was more campaign rhetoric vs an actual plan of action. I am calling this rhetoric because I’ve heard these promises from him before. And in following his administration’s actions, I feel he will continue to spend us deeper into debt. The president made an offhand comment about how if anyone had a better idea on how to reform Healthcare in America, to let him know. Well I will be giving him a call, since I think I have a better way to address healthcare in America, and it is not a plan that involves the federal government running our healthcare. These are my thoughts, please feel free to comment below. Thanks –Donn

There is not a speech Obama makes that doesn’t sound like he is still campaigning. After a year in office he has shown his leadership abilities are flawed beyond any of his campaign slogan’s. “Yes we can” go deeper and deeper into debt as a nation! “Change” of government run healthcare is not the solution to healthcare in America, so Donn I hope you did call and offer your idea to address healthcare in America!
I agree, that it doesn’t matter what color the job; pink-purple-green-just JOBS!!

  5. The main culprits that are driving government spending up are health programs. By Obama’s own budget tables, health programs took up only 0.4% of GDP in 1962 and always has grown every year until it takes up 6% of the GDP in FY2009 coming to almost $852.9 billion and expected to go over $1 trillion in FY2013. For the government to truly deal with the deficit and the real problem, the debt, they need to face down the sacred cows of Medicare/Medicaid. In addition to these, they need to also deal with Social Security. A failure to do so will cause the next foreseeable economic armageddon when the bulk of the baby boomers retire.

  6. So many people with an opinion on the Tea Party – yet so little knowledge about what they actually represent or its political origins. If they are extremist then they represent a large part of America. They are Americans who don’t like how our government is throwing away our tax dollars and spending money we don’t have in this country. They started a grass roots movement to get a message to their government representatives. Don’t waste our tax dollars! How UnAmerican is that?

  8. Michael Moore is right in terms of what he is saying. Obama needs to get his actions through, he is the boss, and his ideas WILL work. Health Care like Obama’s works well most places in the world where similar legislation is performed. People need to stop bashing on Obama, he is an intelligent man and will be great for this country if bipartisanship is reached.
