There is a problem with healthcare in America, but I don’t think that creating a HUGE government run system is the answer. The problem with healthcare is cost. There are many ways we can address cost without creating a big government solution. What we need to do is to get the providers of healthcare competing on price. An example of this is Lasik surgery. When this procedure first came out it cost @$10,000. It was also not covered and is still not covered under health insurance plans. Yet today the cost is @$500. The reduction in cost is due to the fact that the providers of this procedure had to compete on price.
How do we get to where providers compete on price? First we need to inject as much competition as possible. Second we need health insurance to be delivered similar to auto insurance. This would change the delivery of health insurance, allowing it to be used during a catastrophic heath care event, I.E. hospitalization. The day to day medical expenses incurred by the consumer would then be paid utilizing the Health Savings Plan (HSP). The HSP allows consumers to save money, tax free, into an account used for health care expenses. This will accomplish two important goals; 1) it will get consumers looking at the cost of health care and; 2) it will make providers compete on price.
Other ways we can reduce costs are:
1. Change the physician billing system. The AMA's CPT system is an overly complex insurance/procedure billing system that raises the cost of health care delivery at the doctors office. Eliminating this system will save the doctors an estimated 40-60% of their cost of doing business.
2. Tort Reform. I don't think that tort reform in the current form will actually work. There are several technology solutions that used together would help reduce the physician's liability and still allow consumers to litigate for malpractice. Reducing the risk of liability for physicians will reduce their costs and reduce the need for defensive medicine which will, in turn, reduce the delivery cost of health care.
3. Prescription drug laws. Changing these laws will reduce the cost of medicine, another important factor to health care costs today.
4. Crack down on Medicare fraud. This is still occurring today and needs to be addressed to reduce our cost of delivery to those who cannot afford any health care coverage.
These are just some of the examples we can use to reduce the cost of health care in America. Working together with other like-minded conservatives and those who have America's best interests in mind, we can bring about the needed changes.
